France's men completed their project with the gold in the Stade de France, despite struggling through the group stage in beating Uruguay and drawing with the United States. They also lost to Fiji, but they would meet them again in the final, and end the Fijians' two-time gold medal unbeaten run of 17 matches, with a comprehensive 28-7 victory. And despite their struggles on the World Tour, South Africa - after knocking out New Zealand in the quarter-finals, claimed a bronze medal defeating Australia, with a try in red time, 26-19.
 
New Zealand's women kept hold of their gold medal, after sauntering through their first four matches, they held off the United States in the semi-final. Their opponents were Canada, who had beaten the hosts France in the quarter-finals, and then the other favourites Australia in the semi-finals. And they would lead in the final as well, before Stacey Waaka's try was enough for a 19-12 victory. Australia meanwhile were shockingly pushed from the podium, losing 14-12 to the United States in the bronze medal match.
