South Africa won a record fourth World Cup, and a second in a row, as they ground down fellow previous three-time winners New Zealand, 12-11 in the final in Saint-Denis. Handré Pollard kicked four penalties, and although Beauden Barrett scored the only try for the Kiwis, two missed attempts at goal - the conversion by Richie Mo'unga and then a late penalty by Jordie Barrett, meant the South Africans hung on despite not being able to score against a 14-man opponent in the second half.
New Zealand had already lost their first game against the hosts, 27-13, but then rolled through their opponents, including group stage wins over Namibia (71-3), Italy (96-17), and Uruguay (73-0), as well as after hanging on to beat Ireland 28-24 in the quarter-final, then eased past Argentina 44-6 in the semi-final. But they could not beat an opponent who won all three of their knockout round matches by a single point - 29-28 against France, then 16-15 against England - the first time that has happened.
England, after being written off before the tournament which included a loss to Fiji, they finished third with a 26-23 win over Argentina. Fiji themselves made the quarter-final, before losing to England, but after beating Australia 22-15 in the group stage, then were themselves involved in a historic defeat by Portugal 24-23.
