For the first time the league expanded the season to 23 matches, adding a weekend with all teams playing in Adelaide, mirroring the rugby league weekend's held in both Australia and England.
Defending champions Geelong missed out on the finals, finishing in 12th. Collingwood would claim a 20th minor premiership, despite a 13 match winning streak by Port Adelaide, who would miss out on second on percentage to Brisbane. And they and fourth place Melbourne - for the second straight year - were eliminated despite the double chance in two straight games, to Greater Western Sydney and Carlton respectively.
But the top two teams would make it to the Grand Final, and after winning a controversial preliminary final against the western Sydneysiders, another controversial finish helped Collingwood to maintain a victory that claimed their 16th championship, in a four point victory over Brisbane. It was Collingwood's first title since the Grand Final Replay win in 2010, and denied their opponents their first since 2003.
