In what may have been the tightest league race in the league's history, the top three teams finished with matching 20 wins, 7 losses records, with Wigan taking their fourth league leaders' shield on points difference ahead of Catalans and St. Helens.

There was also a shock as Second League champions Leigh bucked all trends, and not only survived in the top flight, but finished fifth and made the playoffs, after flirting with the top spot during the first half of the season.

Leigh would go out in the eliminator against Hull KR, before in the semi-finals they too were disposed, comfortably, by Wigan 42-12. Meanwhile, Catalans were ending St. Helens' four year reign, with a late Sam Tomkins try giving them a 12-6 win in Perpignan.

In the Grand Final, it was another defensive struggle - 2-2 at half-time, Liam Marshall scored the only try as Wigan pulled out a 10-2 victory to lift the league trophy for a sixth time, and first since before the St. Helens dynasty started in 2018, and extend their historical title lead over all, with their 23rd top flight championship.

At the bottom, it was a 'battle' between rivals - Castleford and Wakefield - as to who would survive. They would finish with points differences of -451 and -439 respectively, but Castleford won two more matches, 6 to 4, sending their local rivals down to the Second League instead.
