St. Helens claimed a historic fourth straight title - as well as claiming a third League Leaders' Shield in five years - when they defeated Leeds 24-12 in the Grand Final. Leeds had come through from fifth - winning away matches at Catalans and then Wigan, but the Merseyside club were once again too strong for the rest of the league, becoming champions for the 10th time in the new league era, and 17 overall.
 
A historic season for France with Toulouse joining Catalans, however despite running the lower clubs like Wakefield and Warrington close for much of the season, they would only win five matches and would become the fourth straight promoted club to fail to remain in the league.
