The men's tournament saw South Africa claim gold for the second time, allowing just four tries in their six matches, before defeating Fiji 31-7 in the final, to consign the South Pacific islanders to silver for the fourth time. Defending champions New Zealand saw a 14-0 lead in the semi-final to the Fijians turn into a 19-14 golden point extra time loss to end their bid to retain their title. The Kiwis would have to settle for bronze, defeating Antipodean rivals Australia 26-12.
 
In the women's tournament, New Zealand were also defending champions - after winning the inaugural tournament on the Gold Coast four years earlier. But again they were beaten in a semi-final - this time by Australia, 17-12. And their Tasman rivals would go on to claim gold as they raced into a 22-0 lead in the final on their way to denying Fiji 22-12. New Zealand again claimed bronze, defeating Canada 19-12.
