In an Olympic year held with only a scant few locals in Beijing due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Ryoyu Kobayashi became World Cup overall champion for the second-time as well as champion on the Olympic normal hill. The Japanese jumper also claimed silver on the large hill in Zhangjiakou behind Norwegian Marius Lindvik who also became an Olympic champion for the first-time. Lindvik later became Ski Flying World Champion on home snow in Vikersund. Austria won the team gold at the Olympics, their third all-time, whilst Slovenia claimed a historic first at the Ski Flying Worlds.

Eventual World Cup overall champion Marita Kramer was forced to withdraw from what could have been, given she'd won six World Cup events in the season by this point, the Austrian's first Olympic gold due to testing positive for coronavirus, so instead it was Ursa Bogataj of Slovenia who became champion for the first time. And she was part of the Slovenian quartet which romped to the inaugural mixed team Olympic gold, albeit in a competition spoiled by numerous suit violations that saw their rivals fall by the wayside.
