Another season of the tournament for the top European club sides was badly affected by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic with 11 pool stage matches cancelled due to player cases.

Once the knockout round got underway, the French clubs dominated again with four making the quarter-finals and with a pair of them playing each other, three of them - Paris R, La Rochelle and Toulouse, made the semis. The quarters also saw a rare penalty shootout as Toulouse beat Munster 4-2 after the sides were locked at 24-24 after extra time.

The three French clubs were joined in the semi-finals by perennial challengers Leinster, and the Irish side made the final with a comprehensive 40-17 victory over defending champions Toulouse. That ended the possibility of a repeat of the previous year's final, but La Rochelle made it again with a 20-13 win at Paris R.

And after being denied only 12 months earlier, it looked like the same in the final in Marseille, as Leinster led into the final minutes having kicked seven penalties to lead 21-17. But with only a minute left, Arthur Retiere  finally finished off a long spell of being repelled on the line by the Irish side, with a historic try as La Rochelle lifted their first European title 24-21.
