The first of a planned two years of expansion (albeit no-one was promoted at the end of the season due to playing ground regulations), the return of London S to the top flight after being forcibly relegated due to ongoing salary cap violations was overtaken by the resurgence of Leicester.
During that same 2019-20 season, Leicester would have finished last on match points but after a sixth-placed finish in 2020-21, they came out and won their first 11 league matches, including a 13-12 victory over London S, before being finally downed for the first time at Coventry W 16-13. By then the calendar had turned into 2022 (January 9th). They would go on to finish top to complete a two-year worst-to-first turnaround with 20 wins from 24 matches, seven points clear of London S.
The top two would make it to the Twickenham final after semi-final victories over Northampton and Twickenham H respectively, but with the score level 12-12 and the game seemingly heading towards extra time, Freddie Burns kicked a title-winning drop goal in the 80th minute to give Leicester their 11th title and first since 2013.
