Although Melbourne comfortably topped the ladder in the regular season, they would lose to both Grand Finalists in the playoffs, with a 14-6 preliminary final loss to defending champions Sydney ending their season. In what became a controversial Grand Final, Sydney then retained the championship for a second consecutive season with a 14-8 victory over Canberra, becoming the first side since Brisbane in the early 1990s to do so.
