In the women's tournament, after defeating Korea at the death in their semi-final, Norway claimed their first title by defeating Russia 34-27 in the gold medal match, as they went through without being matched in any game in the tournament. The Koreans claimed the bronze medal, however, defeating Hungary 33-28.
 
In the men's tournament, France ended the dream run of Iceland in the final as they claimed their first gold, 28-23. Croatia, who had been edged out by two goals by France in the semi-final went home empty-handed as they lost the bronze medal match to Spain, 35-29. Both winners would go on and repeat in London four years later.
