Five years after the set was first mentioned, finally we've got around to coming through and creating the set of the 2001-02 season, with the set containing the top 75 men and 73 women who were eligible to receive cards, from the respective World Cup standings. Each biathlete has two cards - one for time trial races, and one for head-to-head races.
In the men's, Frenchman Raphaël Poirée won his third straight overall World Cup title, winning seven races in the season, but only getting a silver in one race at the Olympics (which would prove his best finish) in the pursuit. Instead it was World Cup runner-up, Norwegian Ole Einar Bjørndalen who claimed a historic sweep of the then all three competitions in Salt Lake City. Poirée would win the standalone mass start World Championship in Oslo Holmenkollen, however.
In the women's, Sweden's Magdalena Forsberg won her sixth, and final, straight overall World Cup title, winning nine times in 2001-02, but like Poirée, would only claim two bronzes in the three races in Utah. Instead the Olympic golds were spread two to Germany, with Andrea Henkel winning the individual and Kati Wilhelm the sprint, before Russia's Olga Pyleva claimed pursuit gold. And it was Ukrainian Olena Zubrilova who won the mass start World Championship.
