Wales were denied a first championship in nine years, and were forced to share with defending champions France, after the latter went to Cardiff in the final round and held out for a 10-9 victory. France had earlier been defeated by Scotland in Edinburgh, 23-12, like 2 years ago forcing the French into a shared title, although this time this was Scotland's only victory as they shared last place with Ireland.
